There are two schools of Christian thought on love between a man and a woman.
One is that it is significant in this life only, a matter of reproduction, mutual support and comfort. The bible says as much, especially the Old Testament. Jesus said that in heaven the angels do not marry, nor are given in marriage.
But He also likened marriage to his relationship with the church, an incredible union of love and sacrifice that lives forever.
The New Testament elevates marriage, a holy and spiritual union between man and woman, to something that the Old Testament could only see as shadow. Back then it was mostly hard, contractual. In some cases it was brutal, the woman being bought and sold as mere property.
Now it is a union of co-heirs in Christ. Of Bride and Bridegroom. They are not the same, but they are one.
Perhaps in heaven we are no longer married in the earthly sense, but I have to believe two souls that are so completely intertwined here, that truly love like that, will share together in something extraordinary there.
I don’t know what we’ll be, exactly. But love is divine, and if we truly love one another here in this way, then it surely will endure for all eternity.
